The Heartbeat of Big Bells: Conversations with DJs Stefan Medici and Doogie Mustard from Saturo Sounds Radio

Updated: Dec 7, 2025

At Big Bells Digital, our community has always been at the heart of everything we do — from the artists releasing on Big Bells Records to the DJs who support our music around the world. This month, we sat down with two of our long-time supporters and resident DJs, Stefan Medici and Doogie Mustard, to talk about their passion for electronic music, their journeys behind the decks, and the projects that keep them inspired.

Both DJs have been championing our releases, sharing our music through their mixes, radio shows, and live sets. Through these interviews, we want to spotlight their stories, celebrate their contributions, and introduce them to the wider Big Bells community — because supporting each other is what keeps the underground scene alive.

Spotlight on Stefan's Medici Journey and Contributions to the Underground Scene

BIG BELLS DIGITAL: Hey Stefan, thank you for joining us for this interview. We’re excited to have you with us! You’ve been an active presence in the scene, and we love seeing your passion for music. To start, could you share how your journey into DJing began? Also, you’re currently a resident at Saturo Sounds and After Hours FM — can you tell us a bit about those residencies and any other regular DJ mix sessions you’re involved in?

STEFAN MEDICI: Since my late teens and early 20s, I began listening to club music. My interests were originally House music and Techno. Following Oakenfold and listening to the Global Underground series completely changed my perspective on electronic music. That’s where I began enjoying the deeper sounds of trance and progressive house. In 2019, I purchased my first mixer with the only intention of just messing around and having fun with it. As soon as I got the mixer to work, I became hyper-focused on making mixes, and that addiction continues to this day. I’m always looking forward to my radio shows on AfterHours FM and Saturo Sounds. With AHFM, I have the option of playing a wider range of sounds with the many styles of Trance, Melodic House/Techno, and Progressive House. Typically with bigger energy and a higher tempo. Now with Saturo Sounds, I typically stick to the deeper underground sounds of Progressive House, Deep House and Melodic Techno. I enjoy playing many styles of electronic music, so I’m always trying to incorporate a wide array of sounds within my mixes and live sets. I am also actively presenting guest mixes with Compatible Creative and Big Bells Digital. I enjoy the collaboration with other labels and radio stations.

BIG BELLS DIGITAL: This year, you performed at the Saturo Sounds showcase during the Amsterdam Dance Event — an amazing milestone! Could you tell us about your ADE experience? How was the atmosphere at the showcase, and what were some of your impressions of the festival and the city of Amsterdam overall?

STEFAN MEDICI: I recently played a closing set for Saturo Sounds during the 2025 Amsterdam dance event. This is my third consecutive year playing in Amsterdam. The venue at Bar Lunar was amazing. A professional DJ and sound setup allowed us to play to our strengths and rock the house! Quite an electric atmosphere and a great crowd to connect with. I was privileged to play alongside some super-talented Saturo residents and some big names like Aubrey Fry, DJ Ruby, Mayro, and Indigo Man. Saturo Sounds is a great platform to present my interests with the underground sound of electronic music. They have supported me and my efforts during my residency with them. And likewise, I do my best to support them the best way I can. ADE is a great experience meeting new people in the industry and getting together with old friends. There are so many great shows to attend. I’d say the most difficult part of planning for the event is deciding which shows to go to. Some of your favorite artists or labels could be playing at the same time. My highlights for this 2025 trip were, foremost, the Saturo Sounds party at Bar Lunar with 50 Hertz and Casa Productions. I also attended the Forensic Records and Selador Records shows where I was able to see legends play like Lexicon Ave, Nicholas Rada, The Wash, Dave, Seaman, Steve Parry, and SuperFlu, just to name a few.

BIG BELLS DIGITAL: You have been a long-time supporter of our music, and we truly appreciate your continuous support and connection with Big Bells Records. As we’re already deep into 2025 with some exciting releases behind us, could you share your Top 3 favorite tracks from Big Bells Records released this year? What makes those particular tracks stand out for you?

STEFAN MEDICI: Big Bells has supported me on my journey and I reciprocate by playing their tunes in my mixes and sets. What’s great about Big Bells is that their library of music is quite diverse, consisting of worldwide talent showcasing many styles of the Underground sound. That being said, here are my favorite BB tracks of 2025. In no particular order. Will Daley - Currents (Original Mix) - Complex, Deep, Hypnotic Riolie - Loftus (Original Mix) - Driving Rhythm, Big Energy, Melodic Frank Savio - Head in the Clouds (Original Mix) - Deep Groove with Big energy, Dancefloor Crush J-Sevilla - Tepoztlan Magic (Original Mix) - Hypnotic Deep groove, Intricate, Melodic Chris M - Fever (Club Mix) - Big energy, Driving Vocal, Melodic On a general note I enjoy big energy tracks with unique sounds. The few tracks I chose here have those elements which I enjoy playing in my mixes and live sets.

Interview with Doogie Mustrad: A Journey into DJing and Radio Residencies on Saturo Sounds

BIG BELLS DIGITAL: Hey Doogie, thank you for joining us for this interview. You have been a long-time friend and supporter of our label’s music, and we truly appreciate that. To begin, could you tell us how you first got started with DJing? Do you currently have any radio residencies or regular DJ mix sessions?

Doogie Mustard: I started dj'ing when I was 14 years old and used belt drive record decks with no pitch control. I just loved the idea of mixing music as I adored the electronic sound of the rave scene at the time...proper hands in the air music! I soon moved onto Technics SL1200s and then shortly joined Bass Reaction, a well known Scottish techno band, who were well known for their massive hit 'Technophobia'. I toured with Bass Reaction for a couple of years and then listened to Anthony Pappa's GU Nubreed compilation. This is where I found my place with Progressive House. I now have a setup with XDJ1000MK 2's and a Pioneer DM mixer and I have 2 radio broadcasts every month. My longest-running show for 6 years now is Progressive Epidemic on www.saturosounds.com and more recently, I started a residency on Midnight Express fm. I have also been part of Progressive House UK for most part of 2025 too...it's been a busy year! I will never say no to any guest mix opportunities either and it gives me a chance to create new mixes with the array of good music and promos out there. Massive respect to all of the artists and labels that are kind enough to allow me to play their music before it is released, its a real privilege.

BIG BELLS DIGITAL: We know you attended Balance Festival in Croatia this year. Could you share with our readers your experience of the festival — how was your time there, which DJ sets stood out to you, and are you planning to attend again in 2026?

Doogie Mustard: Balance festival was absolutely amazing on so many levels. If you like Progressive House, then I would definitely recommend this festival in 2026! The sheer amount of 'legends' playing at the festival this year was a dream come true and being able to meet so many of my heroes in person was just tremendous. There were so many amazing sets this year, but I would have to say that Sasha & Digweed, Nick Warren, Anthony Pappa and D-Nox were the ones that stood out for me! Everyone was amazing, though and I look forward to next year, where I think the festival will be bigger and better (if that is possible?)

BIG BELLS DIGITAL: As we mentioned earlier, you have been a strong supporter of our label’s music and mission, and we would like to thank you once again for that. Could you tell us which release from Big Bells Records has been your favorite in 2025 so far?

Doogie Mustard: I would have to say that SONIDDO, Airwave (SL) - Shout Of Whispers (ShemoW Remix) and Shell Robinson - Midnight Run (Original Mix) have been my favourite tracks this year so far. Sorry, can't pick just one! ;) and being able to meet Shell at the Balance festival was amazing too, although a translator may have been a 'good thing' with my broad Scottish accent :) haha.

We love music! Let's work together ❤️
